In order to avoid asking, “Do you need to go potty?” getting a “no” response and accidentally putting extra pressure on our kiddos, here are other ways to prompt!
Remember: Prompting is one of 3 things:
1. Statement - it’s time to go potty
2. Choice - do you want me to go first or you?
3. Challenge - I bet I can get to the potty first!
“I see you dancin’” or “I see that look on your face” whatever their signal is
“Oh boy, let’s go!”
“Tell me when you feel pee inside riiiiight here” and point to lower abdomen
“Gotta sit first and let it allllll out before we eat/go outside/get in the car.”
“We can riiiiight back to this seat when you’re done putting your pee in the potty.”
“I’m going to keep your toy safe for you while you let your pee out on the potty.”
Hold out hands as if to be helpful.
“Ope, everyone freeze! Bud, go use the potty, we will be frozen until you get back!
Now noooobody move!”
“You can either do a froggy hop to the potty with me, or a big bear lumber. Which
one?”
“You can either race me to the potty, or get a piggy back ride. Which one?”
“You can either sit and pee now, or when my timer rings in 2 minutes. Which
one?”
“Okkkk fiiiine, Timer, we will use the potty. We hear ya.”
“We’re here! Hey, they have a bathroom here, did you know that?! Let’s go on a
hunt to make sure we know where it is. I wonder what the hand soap smells like! I
brought your potty topper. Let’s see how it fits!”
“Let’s go sit and read our two books.”
“It’s time! Go pick a toy from the basket.”
“Let’s go sit and sing our song!”
“Iiiiiiif you have to go potty, stop, and go right away! Flush and wash and be on
your way!” -Google Daniel tiger potty song.
If “potty” has become a trigger word, just take it out of any of these. They’ll know
what you mean. And there’s less of a resistant reaction.
If it is day 1-2, prompting should be MINIMAL. If you feel yourself starting to ask,
start singing baby shark or something. “Dooooo……do do do baby shark do do do
dooo.”
A note about the language “have/need to go potty.” Many kids relate this to like,
MUST GO NOW. I like the language, “I’ll have to go SOON. Better get it out now!”
or "Pee/poop is coming soon."
